System Protection


TRC has extensive experience providing relay settings, studies and calculations for numerical, static and electromechanical relays, NERC compliance support, outage and fault analysis, as well as a wide variety of substation automation applications.


Our goals are to make the client’s job easier, be an extension of the client’s staff, provide flexibility, and deliver a quality product. We have performed fault coordination studies and provided calculation documents to meet our client’s standard format or provided our own if there is not a standard practice.

Our relay setting and studies work has involved power transmission, generation and distribution equipment from Extra-High Voltage (EHV) to distribution circuits. TRC has specified, set, tested, and commissioned relays on virtually every type of power system equipment, including transmission lines, power transformers, capacitors, substation busses, and generators.

TRC has provided settings for many of the available numerical utility relay manufacturers, including:

  • Schweitzer Engineering Labs (SEL)
  • General Electric (GE)/Multilin
  • Areva
  • Asea Brown Boveri (ABB)
  • Basler Electric
  • Cooper Power Systems
  • Siemens

TRC has also provided settings for many of the electromechanical relay (EM) types still in use. TRC has designed, installed, set/programmed and commissioned substation Automation/Integration platform (Smart Grid) systems using Cybectec, SEL, Orion, Telvent, GE, and Allen Bradley. We will meet our client’s standard or recommend and install a successful design if there is no standard.
