Regulatory Update   |   Mar 1st, 2016 FERC Extends CIP Standard Implementation Dates

5

Following a motion from the Trade Associations submitted on February 4, 2016, FERC has granted an extension to the implementation dates for the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Version 5 Reliability Standards.

FERC granted the requested extension on the basis that separate implementation dates in short succession created unnecessary administrative burdens on the industry with little or no commensurate benefit to reliability.

All of the revised CIP standards that were previously meant to be effective April 1, 2016 are now effective beginning July 1, 2016 for High and Medium Impact BES assets. The previously approved implementation plan calling for utilities to comply with the requirements applicable to Low Impact BES Cyber Systems beginning April 1, 2017 was not modified by this order.

The CIP standards will continue to evolve as a result of the changing nature of the security threats. Utilities should stay abreast of the standards changes and adapt their CIP standards compliance programs.
