TRC was retained by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) to perform an in-depth inspection of this 6,620’ long steel truss bridge in Orleans Parish.
The bridge is located on Route LA 47 and consists of three through truss main bridge spans with a total length of 1,248 feet; 11 south approach steel girder spans with a total length of 1,652 feet; 11 north approach steel girder spans with a total length of 1,652 feet; 10 south approach concrete girder spans with a total length of 800 feet; 10 north approach concrete girder spans with a total length of 790 feet; 12 south approach concrete slab spans with a total length of 240 feet; and 12 north approach concrete slab spans with a total length of 240 feet.
A detailed, in-depth field inspection was performed on all components of the superstructure and all components of the substructure, above ground or above water, in conformance with the AASHTO Manual for Maintenance Inspection of Bridges. Due to the size and complexity of the structure, the inspection involved the use of special access equipment such as a UB-60 snooper and bucket truck. Associated documentation included the preparation of a detailed bridge inspection report, along with updating the SI&A data and PONTIS element conditions
Non-destructive Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring was performed to re-evaluate the retrofit of cracks in the lower chord of the east truss of the bridge. Being a steel structure, a detailed assessment was also made of the existing coating system.
