TRC personnel serve as on-site on-site technical assistance contractors for the Security and Emergency Preparedness groups at the MBTA and MassDOT. On-site personnel have been working on a number of security and emergency preparedness training initiatives centered on security awareness and emergency response (based on the Incident Command System). Additionally, TRC personnel are responsible for the development and delivery of a security Awareness Training Program for MBTA staff. To date, over 2,000 staff have been trained under this program.
In addition to the security awareness training, the TRC team provided technical support for the MBTA and MassDOT in their leading roles as controllers for two major full-scale exercises. The first Full-Scale Exercise was an Active Shooter/Station Evacuation Drill that took place at the recently completed MBTA Underground Training Facility. In this scenario, an active shooter engaged civilians in a complex train station which connected two transit lines on two platforms within the station. Police, Fire, EMS, were all active participants in the exercise and response.
The second Full-Scale Exercise was the Integrated Communication Incident Tunnel Exercise. In this exercise, one of the highway tunnels (the Sumner Tunnel) from Boston to Logan Airport was closed to stage a full scale exercise in which a multi-car vehicle accident caused a car fire and subsequent closure of the highway tunnel. City of Boston Police, Fire, EMS, and other entities along with MassDOT and the MBTA participated in the exercise and Response.
