While small-medium commercial and industrial (C&I) facilities present strong energy efficiency potential, C&I building owners often lack the time and resources to take advantage of the opportunity. TRC designed and administers a turn-key Direct Install Program (Program), on behalf of the broader New Jersey Clean Energy Program, that makes it easy and affordable for small-medium C&I consumers to upgrade to high-efficiency equipment.

Through the Program, a network of experienced contractors provide C&I consumers using no more than 200 kW per month with a free facility energy assessment. Contractors then work with consumers to replace outdated lighting, HVAC, refrigeration, variable frequency drives and other systems and equipment with energy-efficient alternatives.

The Program covers up to 70% of efficiency upgrades—making it a popular solution. 5,600 New Jersey businesses and local governments have enrolled in the Program and received more than $100 million in incentives since its inception in 2009.

One Program participant, Hamilton Township in Mercer County, NJ, received nearly $90,000 in incentives for critical Mercerville Firehouse HVAC and lighting improvements. New efficient light fixtures, occupancy sensors, seven new AC units and a new boiler meant police and fire officials received the facility upgrades they needed to train effectively. These improvements will save Hamilton Township nearly $13,000 in annual energy costs, leading the project to pay for itself in less than 3 years.
