PG&E Office Task Lighting Study

TRC conducted a study to determine if light levels could be significantly reduced to save energy, while still preserving a comfortable and attractive office environment.

Low ambient task lighting in office buildings holds the potential to significantly reduce lighting energy use (versus conventional overhead lighting) by providing higher lighting illuminance only where needed most. Through the project, TRC sought to determine if light levels could be significantly reduced, while preserving a comfortable and attractive office environment.

TRC conducted real-time monitoring studies in operational buildings. This research entailed design, installation and assessment of integrated low ambient task lighting systems in large and small office buildings. The goals were to assess the following factors:

  • Lighting energy use and peak demand
  • Task illuminance levels
  • Occupant reactions to the new lighting
  • Occupant reactions to a simulated demand response event
  • Cost-effectiveness of the lighting system
