Saco Valley Substation Upgrade TRC supported this project to improve the reliability of electricity in northern New England by providing design, construction oversight and commissioning services for the installation and protection of a Phase Shifting Transformer.

Project ChallengesTo stabilize power system reliability in northern New England, Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) embarked on a project to upgrade of the Saco Valley Substation. TRC supported the project with power delivery engineering design services, construction support, and commissioning.
SolutionTo upgrade the substation, TRC modified the existing substation structures to include a 115kV bus extension, protection & control systems, transformer oil containment, and a control house. The project also included the installation of a 290 MVA Phase Shifting Transformer and related equipment.
BenefitsAs a result of the successful completion of the project, immediate power demand in central New Hampshire and Maine can now be met through the improved interconnectivity between Central Maine Power and PSNH’s transmission systems.
