I-5 HOV Improvement

The goal of the project is to expand the current HOV network, improve existing and future traffic operations on I-5 and minimize environmental impacts.

Client:
Orange County Transportation Authority

Project Location:
Orange County, CA

Project Challenges

Interstate 5 (I-5) in Orange County California serves thousands of motorist daily and is the main route to business, entertainment and residential destinations throughout the County. Major improvements and upgrades to I-5 have been implemented over the past 20 years.

Among the Orange County Transportation Authority’s (OCTA) current projects is an effort to add car pool lanes to the North and Southbound sides of I-5 from Pacific Coast Highway to San Juan Creek Road in San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point to improve mobility, capacity and safety.

Solution

TRC is preparing the engineering Plans, Specifications and Estimates to support the 2.5 mile HOV expansion addressing the following:

  • Design of an interchange modification
  • Widening of four bridges
  • Ramp improvements
  • Sound wall and retaining wall implementation

The goal of the project is to expand the current HOV network, improve existing and future traffic operations on I-5 and minimize environmental impacts. TRC will provide engineering plans to minimize weaving conflicts at the termini of the HOV lanes, reduce congestion at merge and diverge locations, and minimize right-of-way acquisition.
