Tidal Power Project Development

TRC identified several sites as potentially meeting the needs of Oceana Energy Company for tidal development and successfully applied for and secured Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) preliminary permits for all of these sites.

Client:
Oceana Energy Company

Project Location:
Nationwide

Project Challenges

Oceana Energy Company hired TRC to perform a nationwide siting study for the installation of tidal In-Stream Energy Conversion Devices (TISECs), and obtain FERC approval for the most promising sites.

Solution

TRC used its expertise in ocean energy development to find sites with exceptional tidal power that were located close to transmission lines and electrical load centers. In addition, TRC evaluated the environmental and human use constraints at these sites to help narrow down the site selection process. TRC identified eleven sites as potentially meeting the needs of Oceana Energy Company for tidal development and successfully applied for and secured FERC preliminary permits for all of these sites. TRC then filed the first FERC pilot license applications for TISEC devices for the two most promising sites: San Francisco Bay in California, and the East River in New York City.

Benefits

As a result of TRC’s siting analysis and regulatory filings, Oceana Energy Company is now poised to secure one of the first FERC pilot licenses for tidal energy development in the United States at its New York City site. The authorization will allow Oceana Energy to test its device, interconnect with the power grid, and will help move the company forward toward a full build project.
